NOIR has always had an important presence in art. After a brief turn-away from the use of NOIR by the Impressionists, NOIR saw a reinvention in the 20th and 21st centuries as a core concept.
Important artists such as Reinhardt, Malevich, Rothko, Kapoor (with Vantablack), Soulages’ Outrenoir, and the drawings of Serra have all played a key role in its revival. NOIR can be understood in the complex use of textures, techniques, and forms, and its application in visual art, fashion, design, and architecture.
Through the relief or the mark-making, NOIR gives contrast to light. The interplay of light and shadow can suggest form and volume, or infinite space. Its positive and negative presence on a surface gives NOIR great complexity. NOIR is a void or a fulness; an attraction and a seduction difficult to elude.- Marie Bonnal
WALLACE is a venue to present & discuss creative practice in relation to constructed environments. Curatorial themes set the conceptual framework for exhibiting art, architecture & design within related modes. WALLACE is a multi-artform art space initiated with the aim of generating dialogue in art and architecture. The gallery is situated within the With Architecture Studio- a working studio space. The initiative has been launched through a series of thematically connected exhibitions, each around a single title. These exhibitions are open to the public and aligned with the philosophy of With Architecture Studio; an architectural practice that values artistic practice and practitioners.
