But design is actually intrinsically linked with business in a number of ways.
Design isn't just an idea or what something looks like but a process. It's all of the decisions that are made and the thought processes along the way that lead to the success, or failure, of a project. It's a collaboration and a team effort.
Join us for a conversation with leading architects and the people who engage them, and hear the stories behind the projects.

Speaker bios:
Claire Tyrrell. Claire is a Senior Journalist at Business News, covering property for the publication since joining in 2021. Claire began her career with Seven West Media in 2009, working at regional publications before moving to The West Australian in 2013, and has also worked in London as a journalist covering the finance sector. As a judge for the WA Architecture Awards, Claire is passionate about good design.
Jimmy Thompson. Design Director at MJA studio since 2011, Jimmy is responsible for all of MJA’s built form, live-ability and sustainability outcomes. It is his role to ensure that the most efficient structural solutions and commercial nous can be balanced with design solutions that respond to local context, heritage and environment in a way that incorporates a sense of whimsy and delight. Above all Jimmy truly gives a damn; about People, Perth, Humanity and the ability of design and Architecture to have a positive effect on its occupants and the environment that surrounds it.
Monique Woodward. Monique co-founded award-winning, Melbourne & Perth based practice, WOWOWA Architecture, in 2010. Currently serving as a National Councilor of the Australian Institute of Architects, Monique was the recipient of the Institute’s National Emerging Architect Prize and co-curated their 2019 National Architecture Conference ‘Collective Agency’. WOWOWA is known for it’s colourful & deliciously textured residential projects as well as it’s robust & playful school buildings and multi-residential communities such as Nightingale.
Nic Brunsdon. Nic is recognised as one of Australia’s leading architects. In 2015 Nic was the winner of the Australian Institute of Architects Emerging Architect Award, first for Western Australia and then nationally. He is a founding Board Member of Activate Perth, a current board member of Open House Perth, a commissioner for the UIA International Sustainable Development task force, and is the current Chair of the Perth Centre for Photography, one of Australia's leading arts organisations. The studio of Nic Brunsdon is committed to servicing the Asia Pacific region through its offices in Perth, Canggu, Margaret River, and Melbourne.
Kyle Jeavons. At Hesperia, Kyle oversees the built form projects through acquisition, planning approval, concept design, construction and delivery. Before commencing with Hesperia, Kyle held senior management roles at Mirvac Group and Fini Group. As Development Director at Fini Group, he was responsible for the highly successful redevelopment of the State Buildings in Perth’s CBD. He also led the successful bids and delivery for major projects such as Elizabeth Quay, Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct, Victoria House at Montario Quarter, Shenton Park the Woolstores in Fremantle and the Leederville Town Centre Project and ABN Building, Leederville.
Brad Martin. Brad is a Development Director at Fiveight, responsible for revitalising iconic Australian assets in the Fiveight portfolio, including Carillon City and the Waldorf Astoria, One Circular Quay. Under Brad’s vision, Fiveight’s projects seek to integrate cultural and physical heritage, leaving a legacy for future generations. Brad joined Fiveight in 2020, bringing over 20 years of experience in the property industry.
Tim Willing. Tim is the founder of Willing, a diverse property group operating across three divisions – Property, Build and Hospitality. He harnesses more than 30 years of experience in residential development to carefully balance his keen architectural vision with solid construction and professional workmanship, working in long-standing collaboration with some of Australia’s most celebrated architects, planners and consultant teams.
